Could be better

First let me say that I have contacted Morrell Music in Tenn and found them to be very helpful and informative about playing steel. I was somewhat disappointed in the instrument when arrived. The finish was rough, the strings were improperly installed, and the case I order to protect was very flimsy. I think a shorter scale would be easier to play (barring slants) and I personally would have liked the strings at least 1/4 inch higher. It does sound nice and full and everything works on it. I probably couldn't make one for much less than this cost. I wouldn't buy this again if something happened to it. It is a beginner type instrument that most serious students will out grow quickly. It is three octave scale but most people will probably not use the third octave much if at all. The pickup sounds great but somewhat unbalanced particularly the first string. It is and ok guitar worth about what it cost. I also own a Chandler Lap steel which is considerably nicer but cost nearly twice as much.

A low-price Lap Steel with Professional tone

I bought this on a whim after trying out a buddy's. It's a very well-made lap steel with solid craftsmanship. the quality of the wood is very high and the tuning machines are smooth and accurate. The best feature is the Kent Armstrong dual rail pickup. Kent has been winding and designing pickups for decades, and really knows his stuff. This lap steel has a hot, fat and warm tone with plenty of clarity. I would say that it's a more modern tone than say, a Chandler RH-2. But that's not necessarily a bad thing, esp. if you like effects and overdrive. All in all, this is the best lap steel in this price range, and blows away the Gretsch and Fender models, at up to twice the price. If you want the next step up in craftsmanship and vintage tone, save and the Chandler RH-2. But if you like a more modern sound, or want a ready-to-go lap steel at a great price, this is the one to get.

I use this in recording only, so I have not had the opportunity to try it under long gigs etc... It sure gets the job done in the studio! Great sustain and, it is simple to play. If I were going to be a " Lap Steel Player" I might look for a more expensive guitar, but Has I said before , This really does get the job done for my uses"!

a little buzzy

I have been using my Rainsong to play slide parts for the last year and thought I would get a lap steel. I found the sound to be great! The sustain is very good. The high string ring out well, but I found that the lower strings tend to buzz. I think I may need to raise the action, but there is no way to make these adjustments. Compared to a regular guitar this is a great improvement. The buzz is not cool.

This is a straightforward, to-the-point instrument. No frills. Just a very well-made, solid lap guitar. The tone control allows for a variety of feels (blues, country, weepy ballads, South Seas polkas). The markings make it possible for any beginning lap player to play music within hours.
