This octave mandolin has taken a beating from two reviews by the same unhappy person, so I'd like to add my own comments on a used version I just received from MF. The tone is very sweet and balanced, with good acoustic power. While the previous owner may have tampered with the action to make it more like an electric guitar, I raised this slightly on the treble side and am quite happy with the results (very good action). The slightly curved fingerboard is an excellent feature. MF rated my instrument Condition 2, but all of the smudges and supposed "nicks" wiped off with a guitar cleaning cloth, and it now looks completely new. My instrument was not in any way dried out nor was the neck bowed (referring to previous reviews). While it remains an expensive instrument, I'm pleased with it. Please consider the Kelly Octave Mandolin if that rather specialty instrument is what you are looking for.

I played a Michael Kelly Octave Plus F-Style mandolin in a store a year ago, and four years ago as well. It sounded, played and looked amazing. I'm still considering a cheaper octave mandolin, because I don't need the additional quality or resale value of a name brand, midgrade instrument.This is a great choice for novice or hobbyist players who can't afford more.

Whatsamatter guys, your not going to post my previous review of this instrument AND your service. Not to mention the extremely poor way that you wharehouse acoustic instruments and let them dry out and warp and then ship them anyway?

My wife purchased this Octave for me in Nov. '05 for Christmas gift.So many problems with it..badly bowed neck,fretts poorly dressed and some loose,bridge not prop. fitted to arched top and the whole instrument extremely dried out.I didn't open this "gift" until after the 45 day guarantee had expired so MF wouldn't give an inch on taking it back. But I guess that's what you get when you deal with MF on a Korean made mando.I won't ever buy anything from Musicians Friend again, and will advise friends to do the same.
