KM 150

I play guitar and bought this for something new to try. Have never played a mandolin before. (Arrived yesterday, 28 Jul 09)Set up went pretty quick with no problems. So far, seems to be a quality piece. The tone is excellent. I look forward to many hours of playing as this thing is hard to put down. Excellent product, great addition to my acoustic collection. As it looks now, my 4 year old will probably get a lot of play time as well, it's a perfect fit for her and as far as I'm concerned, this insturument cannot produce a "bad tone" regardless of what strings she is hitting. Fun, fun, fun instrument. The only negative I might say would be that the instrument seemed to have been packed directly from the production line as it still had "wood dust" and appears to have missed the "clean and polish" line. No regrets though, this is one of those things if it ever grows legs or needs replaced, it definately will be missed, but not for long it will go directly to the head of the budget line. Buy it.

Nice mandolin on a budget

I am not by any means a serious mandolin player. My parents got me this as a gift on a lark as my dad was listening to a lot of bluegrass at the time.

That said, for the price it is a very solidly constructed intstrument (having survived the original shipping, shipping to Japan, and at least two trips packed in a suitcase on an international flight with naught but my underwear to protect it fromt he ravages of baggage handlers) and excellent bang for the buck.

The tuners hold a pitch very well, the finish is applied fairly evenly, and the fretwork is acceptable provided that the floating bridge is set up correctly. There are some rough spots on the finish in the shadowy recesses of where the neck meets the body, but that is largely cosmetic.

All in all, I would say it is a solid instrument, easy to learn on, and great for the price.

I have a played a mandolin like this for four years and their is no better mandolin than this. Mine is pretty old but it still sounds great. It holds its tune really really well, has a beautiful clear sound, and is very affordable. It has a rich traditional tune and is great for beginers and pros. I have had several people tell me that my mandolin sounds incredible, and that if I ever decide to sell it they would like to have it. I would recomend a Kentucky to anbody.

Not a bad little mandolin for the price. It's very well made. I can't find a single flaw in the craftsmanship. Beautiful finish and nice neck/fretboard. One thing to remember though...ALL mandolins will require a pro set up in order to have proper intonation. Take it to a tech and get the nut filed, bridge adjusted and possibly tweak the truss rod a bit and you'll have a great little starter mandolin for a really good price. Consider buying a case or gig bag too...this thing is beautiful and will need some protecting to keep that way.

The Kentucky 150 is a terrific first mandolin. It's all solid, has decent tuners and seems solidly made. It's also the best value of any mandolin in this price range.
