Good Value - Fun to play

I've been playing the guitar for 46 years, then one day, out of the blue, my wife buys me a ukulele.

My first thought was "Oh well, I guess I have to learn how to play this thing as to not hurt her feelings." I quickly learned that the chord shapes are very similar to the guitar, so it didn't take long before I was playing a tune. Ok, so it was it the wrong key, but I didn't consider this a serious instrument and just wanted to play a song without to much effort.

10 months later, I'm finding myself playing the ukulele way more than my guitars. It practically taken over all my playing time. This is a very fun instrument to play.

Definitely, one of the best gifts my wife gave me.

Oh, and I was wrong, this is a serious instrument.

I just purchased this and love it. When I first saw it, I thought the strings looked like fishing line, but after tuning it up, I decided not to re-string it. This uke is nothing like my solid koa soprano and I don't have an amp yet, but it has a sweeter and more treble, fun light-hearted sound. It has a unique look and appears to be well-made. It is exactly what I wanted and the price was right.

While I was in Hawaii I played many Soprano Ukes covering many price points. I found this Applause/Ovation Uke and it was the only one that was properly intonated. The one I purchased was a special edition with Koa wood for the top and palm trees instead of leafs for the inlays but it is the same Uke otherwise. The Koa wood may give it a better tone because mine has great tone unplugged. The neck has a great feel and the tuners are like fender vintage guitar tuners with plastic buttons and a slightly larger shaft diameter for the nylon strings. They work fine but could be damaged quite easily. The Uke came with a very cheep gig bag. I had a hard time finding a case that would fit this Uke because it is a liitle larger than most Soprano Ukes. I finally found a Lanikia soprano Ukulele hard case that was reported to fit the Applause Uke. I bought it and I am very happy to say the Lanikia case fits the Uke great!

Very twangy

I don't know... but when I play uke I like a nice mellow warm tone that isn't abrasive and is good for laying down the rhythm in an acoustic setting.

This uke, while seems to be very well made, is SERIOUSLY twangy. Almost sounds like a toy to me, but if thats the tone you are after, then whatever. Or I suppose if your only playing it plugged in, then you could get a rounded off tone via EQ settings. However, I play acoustic uke way more than electric when it comes to uke, so yeah. I've played cheaper ukes that are also soprano, and they have a much warmer tone than this one.

Acoustic-Electric Applause Soprano Ukulele Review

For one thing, the UAE20 does not have visible wood grain like on the display picture on most websites. Instead, the black model is painted solid black and the red model is solid black with a red-tinged sunburst. It still looks like a beauty, however. I'm not sure why Applause made the ukulele so the fretboard ends at 12 for the G string and 17 for the A string, and I must say that it's not a very functional design. The ukulele has a nice vintage sound, but it is dreadfully quiet when unplugged, like an unplugged electric guitar. When plugged in it sounds magnificent, but the high strings sound significantly quieter than the low strings so it is necessary to turn the treble up high and the mids down low. Unfortunately because of the low acoustic volume, this isn't a uke that you can take with you places and play for people without a nearby amplifier, so it lacks the fun "portable" aspect that many enjoy in ukuleles. If you want a ukulele soley for the purpouse of playing it plugged-in, than the applause is a good investment.
